Animal Care Center

Amherst County Animal Care Center is dedicated to serving and protecting the public's health and safety and ensuring the animals' welfare by promoting and providing for their safe, humane, and lawful treatment.
The Amherst County Animal Care Center, which provides for unwanted, abused, and stray animals, falls under the Administrative Division of the Amherst County Sheriff's Office. The Care Center does not handle animal adoptions, which is done by the Adoption Center, operated by the Humane Society of Amherst County. The Adoption Center is in the same building, however.
The department maintains an animal lost and found file, reunites animals with their family, issues dog licenses, and assists citizens with various animal issues and concerns.
The Animal Care Center staff also participates in local and county animal rescues and maintains the facility to meet State and Local regulations governing sanitary conduct.
Anyone with questions about the department or animal issues, in general, can contact us at any time.
