In Amherst County, any dog four months of age and older must be vaccinated against rabies and be licensed with the county. The Amherst County Dog Ordinance and Virginia State Law require this. A current rabies certificate on each dog is required to purchase a dog license. Dog licenses go on sale November 1, 2025, but must be purchased by January 31, 2026, and are good for 1 year. A kennel license will require inspection by the Animal Control Officer before licensing.
Fees for a dog license are as follows:
MALE OR FEMALE $7.00 EACH
SPAYED/NEUTERED $5.00 EACH
KENNEL (10+) $25.00
