Man gets 108 years for attempted capital murder of Amherst Co. deputies

AMHERST Co., Va. (WSET) -- A man who shot at Amherst County deputies will spend 108 years behind bars.

Trevor Ewers was found guilty on two counts of attempted capital murder of law enforcement officers, two counts of use of a firearm in attempting capital murder of a law enforcement officer, and one count of aggravated malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer in September.

The Amherst County Sheriff's Office said during the course of a traffic stop in September 2017 at the Monroe Post Office around 11:30 p.m., Ewers pulled out a gun and shot one deputy in the head.

Another deputy returned fire, hitting Ewers.

Ewers was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

At his trial, the jury recommended he spend 103 years behind bars, but the judge added an additional five years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Ewers received 35 years for the attempted capital murder of Lt. Meador, 35 years for the attempted capital murder of Deputy Karajankovich, and 25 years for the aggravated malicious wounding against Lt. Meador.
