Deputy Sheriff - 8311

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Performs responsible protective service work in the Sheriff's Office involving a variety of general or support duty assignments; does related work as required. Much of the work may be performed under emergency conditions and may involve considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Performing a variety of public safety duties in the Sheriff's Office including patrol, detention, K-9, LIDS, court room security, transportation and civil process.

Operates a patrol vehicle to observe for violations of laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances; responds to calls for service; investigates crimes and accidents; makes arrests; testifies in court.
Performs assigned court service and security duties; operates metal detector; executes judge's orders and direction.
Transports prisoners, detainees, mental patients, etc. to appointments, court, etc. as assigned.
Interviews victims and witnesses; secures property and evidence.
Prepares detailed reports on activities and assignments.
Serves civil process and criminal arrest warrants and a variety of other court papers and directions.
Performs various K-9 related duties; cares for assigned animal; searches vehicles; tracks suspects.
Performs various school resource duties; works with teenagers, parents and school officials; presents programs at high school; serves as leader of Explorer Program.
Performs various inmate detention and security duties; enforces jail rules and regulations; supervises trustees; transports inmates to and from court.
Serves as LIDS Technician; establishes, coordinates and maintains inmate records and information system.
May be required to be on-call.
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the Code of Virginia; general knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to courts and criminal justice; general knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Office; skill in the use of firearms, public safety equipment and motor vehicles; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Training certification. May require other certifications depending on departmental assignment. Must meet and maintain all department and State training and education requirements for position.
