Welcome Center
Renovation to the Amherst Station is currently underway! The Friends of the Historic Train Station have relocated the station to the Rt. 60 / Rt. 29 crossroads and are now in the process of renovating the structure. This building is to be used for a Welcome Center to Amherst County and offices for the Chamber of Commerce. Grant funding for this project is through the Transportation Enhancement Program.
Built by Southern Railway in 1913-1914, the station was used for a passenger depot and later passenger/freight depot. Passenger service ended in the 1960's and freight services ended in the 1970's.
